In the Saame language of Laplanders, the word Kaavi means a boat harbour. Kaavi is a municipality with 3150 inhabitants in Northern Savo in the province of Eastern Finland. Kaavi was founded in 1875. The total area covers 789,59 km2, of which 115,49 km2 consists of waterways. The municipal centre is about 60 km from Kuopio City and 95 km from Joensuu City. The distance to Kuopio airport is 45 km.
Kaavi is a municipality with many possibilities and specialities, and it also offers many tourist activities. The river Vaikkojoki provides excellent facilities for shooting the rapids and fishing in the summer. There are marked routes for boaters from Lake Saimaa to the visitors` marinas, which are situated in the centre of the municipality of Kaavi and in Luikonlahti. Other local specialities include the slash-and-burn cleared district of Telkkämäki Hill, the Bell Foundry Juutila and utensils crafted from stone by Kaavin Kivi (tombstones, articles for household and art objects).

The only sand casting museum in the Nordic countries, in an old foundry at Vehkalahti in Kaavi.
In Telkkämäki you can learn about the genuine traditions of slash-and-burn clearing.
Besides the cultural activities in Telkkämäki, in the summertime you can enjoy summer theatre performances in Luikonlahti and in Maarianvaara.
