Kaavi and the diamonds -
within everybody´s reach
In the Saame language of Laplanders, the word Kaavi means a boat harbour. Kaavi is a municipality with 3500 inhabitants in Northern Savo in the province of Eastern Finland. Kaavi was founded in 1875. The total area covers 772 km2, of which 99 km2 consists of waterways. The municipal centre is about 60 km from Kuopio City and 95 km from Joensuu City. The distance to Kuopio airport is 45 km.
The industrialisation of Kaavi began in the 1960s, when mining functions were started in Luikonlahti. After the mining operations ended in the 1980s, the municipality was dominated by a wave of entrepreneurial development. Nowadays, there are about 300 industrial workplaces in our municipality, most of which were created in the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to primary production, the most important branches are metal and extracting industry and plastics industries. New permanent workplaces reflect an entrepreneurially friendly but realistic atmosphere in the municipality.
Our municipality has excellent traffic communications. Railway freight wagons can be loaded at the station of Luikonlahti. The nearest deep water harbours are in Kuopio and Joensuu. There are also excellent road transport communications.
We can offer plenty of land suitable for industrial building sites. Nowadays our most important natural resource is wood. In cooperation with our neighbouring municipalities, we continually aim to attract more wood processing enterprises to our districts. The common objective is to create a production cooperation network between municipalities and the local enterprises. Diamonds, which are found in the soil of Kaavi, are used in a small-scale for making jewels.
Holiday accommodation in the area is characterised by its comfortable living standards. In Kaavi we can also offer plots for really spacious building, so inhabitants can live in summer cottages throughout the year.
Kaavi is a municipality with many possibilities and specialities, and it also offers many tourist activities. The river Vaikkojoki provides excellent facilities for shooting the rapids and fishing in the summer. The skiing centre in Maarianvaara offers winter sports for tourists. There are marked routes for boaters from Lake Saimaa to the visitors` marinas, which are situated in the centre of the municipality of Kaavi and in Luikonlahti. Other local specialities include the slash-and-burn cleared district of Telkkämäki Hill, the Bell Foundry Juutila, Carpets Anki and utensils crafted from stone by Kaavin Kivi (tombstones, articles for household and art objects).
